As a Physical Therapy student at New YorkMedicalCollege, I continually encounter persons who strive to maximize their quality of life; and it inspires me to see a person return to the past-times they loved prior to injury or illness. The Achilles Track Club embodies this spirit and encourages people with disabilities to participate in mainstream athletic events with people of all abilities. It aims to provide support, training, and technical expertise to athletes who have disabilities and diagnoses including visual impairments, stroke, cerebral palsy, paraplegia, arthritis, amputation, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, cancer, and traumatic head injuries. The Achilles Track Club, was founded in New York City 26 years ago and now has over 40 chapters across the United States and over 110 chapters around the globe. They offer a variety of programs including wheelchair basketball and training for various running events, which includes the annual New York City Marathon. They are a non-profit organization that relies on community support to realize their mission.
Every year since 1999, the Physical Therapy students of New YorkMedicalCollege host a 5K/10K “Race for Rehab”. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, October 11, 2009. Without your financial support, we will not be able to provide hope and possibility to Achilles Track Club members who choose to participate in athletic events. We hope that you will consider donating to our event and join us for the 2009 Race for Rehab. Thank you so much for helping the students of New YorkMedicalCollege provide support to the Achilles Track Club.
