I met Abby on Valentine's Day.  In a story of serendipity, she has become my inspiration.  So now, as part of Phoenix Children's "Miracles in Motion" program to raise money for the Hospital, I'm running the PF Chang's 1/2 Marathon in her honor on Jan. 13, 2008.

On that day in February, we were prowling the second floor of Phoenix Children's looking for a patient to grace the cover of the Hospital's Annual Report, and we found Abby in the playroom.  She didn't seem sick - she was sassy and full of life as she played "Connect Four" with her Grandma.   But when her Dad walked in the room, it was serendipity - I had met him in the cafeteria just the day before as he waited for his child to be admitted to the Hospital.

Now in the playroom, her Dad told me that Abby had been complaining of pain in her mouth, and when they went to the doctor to have it examined, he came back with a shocking diagnosis.  It was cancer.  Abby was admitted to the Hospital almost immediately, and her chemotherapy and radiation treatments would soon follow.  The news would turn anyone's life upside down.   

Since that day I met Abby and her Dad (again), it's almost uncanny how often I run in to them.  On the job, I work mostly with doctors, leaders, and people outside of the Hospital - I don't meet many patients or families.  But for some reason, this family has been an exception.   

Once a week since February – sometimes more often – they have been at the Hospital, undergoing the treatment she needs to beat her cancer (rhabdomyosarcoma).  Last time I heard, they expect treatments through December.  Witnessing their strength, positive attitude, and enduring determination has been a gracious gift, a serendipitous story (their doctor even shares my sister's married name, Watanabe), and an incredible inspiration.

I've been on a two-year hiatus from serious running since my last half-marathon, but the chance to give back to 11-year-old Abby, her family, and this Hospital has given me the courage to brave my knee troubles and give this race a go.  I would love to have your support as I take on this challenge.
