Copper Update*******
12-30-10
Copper has been steadily improving but the last week his appetite has steadily decreased. On Thursday morning, it took 45 min of spoon feeding to get him to eat about 1/3 can of food.
Copper was taken to Dr Stout and after an exam, his leg was very painful. Of course the infection to the bone is cause for pain but the goofy weather we have been having around here lately has not helped. So, Dr Stout felt that the pain was the cause of Coppers decrease in appetite.
Copper was given an injection and sent home with some pain pills.
Today he is much improved. He polished off a whole can of food this morning without any prompting. He is also moving around better.
Copper will be back at Dr. Stout's next week for more x-rays.
Thank you for all your help and well wishes for Copper
Jill and the hounds of GEBR
The call came into GEBR--
A family had come into possession of a basset hound. They had tried to help him but no longer had the means to do so. Literally, Copper is a walking skeleton.
Copper weighed a grand total of 36 pounds on intake. He should weigh about 60 pounds. Immediately taking him to our vet and running diagnostics, we found that Copper's white blood cell count was elevated and he had an open draining wound on his rear leg. X-rays showed not the fracture we were expecting, but a bone infection. There may be some damage to the bones, but we will have to clear up the infection so we can get a clear set of x-rays.
Copper is going to be in rescue's care for quite some time. He will be on very strong antibiotics for a minimum of 6 months, more likely a year.
Copper is going through nutritional rehab along with the antibiotic treatment. All of this means that Copper's anticipaited long term care will far exceed GEBR's ability to afford it.
Please help us care for Copper on his journey to a happy healthy life and his forever home. Every little bit helps. Could you donate the amount you spend on a specialty coffee for a week? How about the amount you spend on a dinner out at your favorite resturant?
A donation to save Copper's life is tax deductable as GEBR is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501c3 organization. Talk to your tax advisor as to how this can benefit you!
Donating to Copper's cause is simple, fast and totally secure.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
