John “Zip” Paul Barriteau, Jr., 53, died August 31, 2009 after a short battle with Carcinoid cancer. He was born August 30, 1956 in Charleston, S.C., son of the late John “Frenchy” and Patricia Barriteau. He is survived by his wife, Lisa McClain Barriteau; daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Brandon Stevens; son, Matthew Barriteau; sister and brother-in-law, Danielle and James May; sister and brother-in-law, Paige and Hunter Nicholl; father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Linda McClain; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Laura and David Driskell; Cheryl and George McClain; Lynn and Fred Ward; nephews, Zac Driskell, James “Buddy” May, Connor and Grant McClain, and Aaron Burns; niece, Addison Nicholl; great-nephew, Keaton May; and aunt, Elizabeth Yerxa; and many special friends. He spent several happy years of his youth living in the Panama Canal Zone where he raced dirt bikes and cayucos. When Zip was 14, he attended the World Boy Scout Jamboree in Japan and later became an Eagle Scout. Zip graduated from Cristobal High School in 1976. He was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University where he met his wife, Lisa, and played on the soccer team. In 1981, Zip moved to Huntington where he began his 28-year career with Cabell County Schools. He taught shop and Tech. Ed. at Lincoln Junior High, Enslow Middle, Milton Middle and Cabell Midland High School. Over the years, he coached boys’ basketball, football, volleyball, soccer, boys’ track and wrestling. Zip had a small construction company for several years with his longtime friend, David Riggs. He loved to fish and attend NASCAR races. Although his life was cut terribly short, there was much joy. A memorial service to celebrate John “Zip’s” life will take place at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Sue Jarrett officiating. A reception will be held at the American Legion Post 177 in Barboursville after the service.
