The Diabetic Youth Foundation has made an enormous impact in my life. They put on an annual summer camp called Bearskin Meadow Camp and this camp has been my home away from home for the past seven summers. It's a place where being diabetic is no longer something strange and frightening. Diabetes becomes the norm and everyone there can relate, regardless of if they are affected by diabetes personally or if they have a friend or family member with diabetes. I was given the opportunity to go as a camper and was touched and inspired by the passion of my counselors. After years of feeling alone as a diabetic, I was finally in a place where I was surrounded by people who understood what I was going through first hand. The people that make up Bearskin are some of the most amazing, inspirational, and passionate people I have had the pleasure to meet. For the past two summers I have gotten the chance to be a counseolor for other young diabetics. I can only hope that I've inspired them as much as my counselors in the past have inspired and encouraged me. The Diabetic Youth Foundation has become an intrigal part of my life. Even though I'm down in San Diego, far away from all the events that the DYF puts on in the Bay Area, I still hold the foundation dear to my heart. I take every chance I get to get involved and give back, from fundraisers such as this one to driving for twenty hours in one weekend just to be up in Santa Cruz for family weekend. The DYF has become a huge part of my life, and this is my chance to give something back to a foundation that has done so much for me.
