Laura's March is a 5K event in which participants can either walk or run, whichever they prefer, and either individually, in pairs, or even as a team. A little courtesy and common sense can go a long way in allowing participants to do what they enjoy most while mindful of the safety of others on the Bike Path. Those who want more of a challenge can set and monitor not only their own pace but also their own distance.
The primary beneficiaries of the 2011 Laura's March will be Parallel Justice and Dirt Divas .
Parallel Justice helps victims of any crime occurring in Burlington, VT. Through money raised at Laura’s March, it will be able to supplement the medical and counseling assistance customarily available for survivors of domestic and sexual assault, with auxiliary funding for alternative healing opportunities, such as yoga, meditation, fitness classes, and other holistic programs. The ability to support survivors regardless of how long ago the sexual assault occurred acknowledges the long-lasting and continuing effects this kind of crime can have.
Dirt Divas, a mountain-biking program for middle school girls, will integrate a self-defense component that includes developing physical and emotional skills and learning tactics to deal with bullying, harassment, and sexual assault--all with the critical goal of prevention. The program will also work on building self-esteem and sense of self-worth so that girls learn early how to value themselves, set boundaries, and recognize that assault of any nature is not their fault.
Additionally, the LKW Fund will donate a portion of the proceeds to other organizations and programs in the Vermont community in line with our mission.
