1 OF THESE THINGS IS NOT LIKE THE OTHERS

Well, sort of.  The little orange kitten was abandoned by himself and was placed with a group of kittens that were a little older.  He was getting picked on so I asked if we could put him with this group of babies that came in the same weekend.   As you can see they all got along great and immediately snuggled. 

It's that time again!  Barkapalooza is the biggest fundraiser for the West Suburban Humane Society (WSHS).       

WSHS is different from other animal shelters:

WE ARE A NO KILL SHELTER (enough said, right?!)

WE PROVIDE MORE VET CARE  Not only does WSHS provide food and shelter to all of the animals; we also treat illnesses and provide excellent vet care to animals who would be euthanized or allowed to suffer elsewhere.  Emmy the cat had 4 esophagus surgeries before going to her forever home. 

OUR DOG TRAINING PROGRAM IS EXCEPTIONAL   We take the "unadoptable" dog  that would be euthanized at other shelters or sit in a shelter it's whole life and provide training.  In 2010 we sent ~35 dogs through the off site traning program.  We have specially trained volunteers who continue to provide training and reinforcement.  That's 35 dogs that had a chance who did not before!

WE HAVE A HUGE FOSTER CARE PROGRAM  We currently have 60 cats and kittens in the shelter and 50 in foster care.  Not to mention all the dogs and puppies- some you may see at the walk! 

OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE AMAZING  During the storms this summer the most amazing thing happened.  There was no power at the shelter for 4 days.  In the stifling heat we had to leave the windows open for air.  All that was needed was one email saying we needed volunteers to stay overnight so we could leave the windows open and the volunteers were there.

In order to continue all of these great things, the shelter needs to have money.  We do not receive any public funding.  The entire place is run by donations!!  You all know I am a "cat person" (I love dogs too!) and this fundraiser seems like a dog focused event, but it raises money for all of the animals.
