Both of my sisters and my father have Hunnington's disease.  My father passed away in 2007.  This horrible debilitating disease has no cure and at this point any affective or universal treatment.  It is a genetic disease which cannot be prevented and children of an affected parent have a 50/50 chance of having the disease.  Hunnington's effects balance, coordination, fine and gross motor skills as well as mood and reasoning.  The course of the disease is unique to each patient.  Over time they loose control over their body, first voluntary then involuntary.  They eventually lose the ability to walk, speak and swallow.  The physical symptoms coupled with the psychological make it very hard for families and care givers to administer help.  The affected person dies from complications of the disease about 10-15 years after onset.  Research on this disease is very important because doctors believe that advancements made here could affect ANY of the degenerative nerve diseases that are out there such as Multitple Sclerosis, Alzheimers, Dymentia and many others.  In the past few years, there has been much promising evidence that a very useful therapy/treatment is right around the corner.
