Drive4COPD PRO-AM Celebrity Racing Challenge
Please join me in supporting the DRIVE4COPD campaign. DRIVE4COPD is the nation’s single largest awareness campaign for COPD. COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; it includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. You probably know someone with COPD and you may not even know it.
In March 2012, I will be driving in the inaugural DRIVE4COPD Pro-Am Celebrity Racing Challenge. This race will feature well-known faces in entertainment, music and business who will take the wheel of a NASCAR stock car to support awareness, screenings and research for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The statistics for COPD are staggering:
•Approximately 24 million Americans may have COPD; however, as many as 12 million of those people don’t even know they have it.
•COPD is the only leading cause of death that is increasing in prevalence.
•COPD kills more people each year than breast cancer and diabetes combined.
•COPD accounts for more than $40 billion in total health care costs to the nation.
•Women are at increasingly high risk for COPD, as the death rate is growing faster among women with COPD than men.
COPD is treatable, so it is critical that we find individuals at risk and get them screened and diagnosed by a healthcare provider. To date, over 2 million individuals at risk have been screened through the DRIVE4COPD campaign.
This year has already been a busy one for DRIVE4COPD. As the Official Health Initiative of NASCAR®, DRIVE4COPD sponsored the first race of the NASCAR Nationwide Series™ season, the DRIVE4COPD 300. For the third year in a row, the DRIVE4COPD 300 was an incredible success and, according to television ratings, the 2012 race was the most highly-viewed NASCAR Nationwide Series event in series’ history.
