Merlin is a global charity that specializes in providing critical healthcare services during crises. Once the immediate crisis is over, Merlin is unique in that it stays on to rebuild the broken hospitals and clinics and retrains the healthcare workers until the country is able to do it for itself. Merlin has been instrumental in the relief efforts of all the major crises, natural or man-made, of the last 20 years from the tsunami in Indonesia and Thailand, to the earthquake in Pakistan, and the cyclone in Myanmar. Today Merlin is operating in about 16 fragile countries including Darfur, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Sudan, Nepal and so forth and yesterday we added Haiti to that list.

Merlin has launched an emergency appeal for $500,000 to support its efforts the Haiti crisis.  Merlin's emergency teams have started to arrive in Haiti and are now on the ground running rapid assessments of the needs and priorities, whilst immediately treating traumas and injuries.

Priority #1 is to get safe water deliveries up and running to minimize the risk of diarrhea outbreaks, which can be fatal particularly for young children.

Priority #2 is to prevent, diagnose and swiftly treat common complaints such as hypothermia, dehydration and acute respiratory infections which thrive in these terrible conditions.

Priority #3 is to prevent the spread of communicable diseases which will be one of the biggest potential threats in the weeks to come.

Merlin is an incredibly efficient charity and 96 cents on the dollar go directly to the field and those in need.
