Karina Carley's Fundraising Page
It’s been more than three years since Katie took her own life, but a part of me still can’t believe she is no longer with us. When I’m on a beautiful bike ride, at the top of a ski mountain, hear a song she loved, or smell freshly baked brownies, I picture her smiling face and think of how much she would enjoy these moments.
In the fall of 2008, I started working for Samaritans, an amazing non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of suicide in the community. I’ve met too many people who have lost loved ones to suicide and miss them the way we miss Katie. But I find hope from those who say that without Samaritans they might not still be here.
As we all know, suicide is a serious public health problem. More than twice as many people die by suicide than die by homicide in Massachusetts. For every completed suicide, there are 10 attempts serious enough to require hospitalization and an estimated 17 emergency department visits for non-fatal self-inflicted injury. Every person who dies by suicide leaves behind a circle of family and friends like us who are forever changed by their loss.
The 12th Annual Samaritans 5K will take place on October 2nd, eight days before Katie’s 24th Birthday. Last year we formed a team in her honor, and wearing sparkly head bands, ran the 5K to raise awareness and money for suicide prevention. This October we will run again for Katie, with more sparkles and some bright spandex if it doesn't pour rain like last year. Please help Samaritans efforts to provide mental health support and reduce suicide by making a donation to Katie’s Team. Members include:
