HORIZONS FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN

Boston Marathon 2009 Boston,  Massachusetts
Training buddies: Dad

Katherine Atchinson's Fundraising Page

Welcome Friends and Family!

Well…I’m crazy enough to follow in the footsteps of my father and brother and am determined to run in the 113th Boston Marathon on April 20, 2009. In my efforts to bring awareness to homelessness I am attempting to raise $8,000 for Horizons for Homeless Children.

As many of you may know, this is a unique and truly exceptional organization that has been close to my family’s heart for the past 20 years. Through charitable donations, volunteering, marathons (nod to Danny), and my parents’ involvement on the Board of Directors, we have been deeply committed to Horizons and have watched it grow into an organization that is truly making a difference in the lives of children and their families everyday.

Horizon's mission is to improve the lives of children and their families. This mission is an important part of my own philosophy, and something I am deeply committed to. In my still very early years of working in education I have seen how children’s lives at home, or lack thereof, can have a powerful effect on their development.

I am asking you for your help in sponsoring me in my efforts and giving to Horizons for Homeless Children. Through your donation, big or small, you will be investing in the early care and education of young homeless children who would not otherwise enjoy such vital emotional, cognitive and intellectual development. You are literally investing in the quality of life for thousands of children each year.

I have been so blessed my entire life with a loving and supportive family, incredible home and great education. I cannot imagine or even begin to fully understand life otherwise. When my training runs are getting long (and cold!), I try to think of how we all might have a chance to help these children and their families break the cycle of homelessness, and give them a chance for the kind of life we can take for granted.  Please consider contributing to Horizons. It will make my February and March training feel much shorter and warmer knowing I have the support of friends and family, and that Horizons can expand their efforts and continue touching the lives of children and families in need.

Just some giving ideas!
$52.40--2$/mile x 26.2 miles
$131--$5/mile x 26.2 miles
$113--This year is the 113th Boston Marathon
$230--The peak of Heartbreak Hill is 230 feet above sea level

Just to let you know how far your donation can go:
$500--The cost of a visit to Congress for a Horizons for Homeless Children's Staff member, to advocate for homeless children and families
$250--The cost of sending one Horizons for Homeless Children pre-school class on a field trip
$100--The cost of purchasing 17lbs of Legos, 37lbs of Play-doh, or 30lbs of puzzles for Playspace programs
$50 The cost of providing art supplies for one classroom for one month

By the way...for those of you who haven't heard yet, Dad is running the marathon with me this year!
