Yes, it is true...this self-proclaimed 'non-runner' is going to once again train to run the Seacoast Half marathon in November!
Last year, my passion for SASS and our mission to keep kids SAFE motivated me to get off my couch and join the SASS 'Running for You(th)!' training team as a way to both get in better shape and help a REALLY important cause!
Originally, I was just going to organize it for ‘real runners’, but then began thinking about the importance of SASS' work and the need for funds and somehow signed myself up! I thought about how I have been involved in this work for over 22 years and that although progress has been made in the way the system responds to sexual assault, not much has been done to reduce the number of people that continue to be victimized.
I also thought about my daughter, Brenna. I have always been passionate about this work, but now as a Mom, I am that much more determined to keep her and other children SAFE.
This year, I have again joined SASS' 'Running for You(th)!' program because I truly believe in the importance of keeping children in our community SAFE from sexual violence!
It is ironic that the Seacoast Half Marathon starts and ends at Portsmouth High School as it was while I was a senior at that very school (many years ago!), that I was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance that I met at a party. At the time, although SASS existed, there were no awareness programs in the schools, I did not know about the help available and wasn’t able to reach out for assistance for several years.
My hope now is that every child in our community is able to participate in our prevention programs, that we can keep kids safe from victimization, and that if a child has already been victimized that they are able to learn about and access the help available through SASS.
Your donation will go directly toward this effort and on behalf of everyone at SASS and the thousands of men, women and youth that we assist each year, I sincerely want to thank you!
Because SASS has experienced some recent funding cuts, I am hoping to personally raise $2000 this year and do my part to help the 'Running for You(th)!' team reach our goal of $15,000!
SASS has made great strides toward our mission, but there is still a lot of work to be done. If we are truly going to end sexual violence we need everyone to get involved and help. I hope you will consider making a donation and do your part to help SASS keep our children safe!
No donation is too small and all money raised with go to the 'Safe Kids. Strong Teens' prevention education programs provided by SASS and A Safe Place for kids in grades K-12.
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. But, if you would prefer to write a check, please make it out to SASS and put my name in the memo line and mail to SASS, 7 Junkins Avenue, Portsmouth, NH 03801.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
Sincerely,
Kathy Beebe
