The Mecklenburg Patriots 5-on-5 basketball team will represent the state on Special Olympics Team NC and will join 40 other athletes from North Carolina to compete in the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games! The Patriots will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska July 18-23 for a week of competition with more than 3,000 athletes from around the country. The team has played hoops together for 12 years and has won an incredible six gold medals in SONC state-level competition. The team ranges in age from 19 to 45 years old. According to head coach Mike Atwater, each year on the first day of practice their goal is to win a gold medal, but only if they have fun along the way. The team consists of 10 athletes and 3 coaches.
