On Saturday, October 2nd, a group of family and friends will be participating as Team Joe in the Samaritans Annual “Running for Someone Else's Life” 5K in Boston, MA. We will run and walk together in memory of my brother Jose Manuel, known to most as Joe, whom we lost in November of 2009.
Generally considered a taboo topic, suicide is a major public health problem. Just to put it into perspective, here are some basic statistics as reported by the CDC:
- In 2007, the latest year for which we have national data, there were 34,598 suicides in the U.S. This translates to an average of 94.8 suicides per day; 1 suicide every 15.2 minutes.
- Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S., yet among young people ages 15 to 24, it climbs up to 3rd place on the list.
- Each year, more than 376,000 people with self-inflicted injuries are treated in emergency rooms.
My brother, Joe, was an incredibly selfless and giving person, an amazing brother, son, grandson, nephew, cousin, and unconditional friend. By sharing his story, we hope to make a difference in someone else's life and so I ask that you please help us honor Joe and his kind spirit by supporting Samaritans. Your contribution, however small it may be, will help sustain and strengthen their programs for suicide awareness, prevention, and survivor support, positively impacting many people's lives. For more information on Samaritans' mission and services, please visit www.samaritanshope.org.
If you live in Boston and would like to join us on the day of the race, just click here to register (make sure to select “Team Joe” from the drop down menu). You can join us as either a runner or a walker. If you decide to participate, try to let me know by September 15th. All team members will be provided with a t-shirt displaying our team name.
Many thanks for your support! Please feel free to share this with anyone else you think would be interested in donating.
