Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) is a condition that is passed from parents to their children through their genes. This condition may result in serious lung and/or liver disease at various ages in life. Many people have not heard of Alpha -1, it is just as serious and deadly as any other disease and there is no cure
My Dad was diagnosed with this disease in 1989 & after several years he was on O2 and needed a wheelchair. Because of this disease in Feb 1993 , he had to endure a single lung transplant, rejections of the lung and years of suffering. He always made the best and the most out of his his life even with his illnesses. He tried to live as much of a normal life as possible. He was able to walk his daughters down the aisle and see his first granddaughter and grandson born.
My Dad was very active with the Alpha-One Foundation and tried to be vocal and raise as much awareness as possible. Which is what I am trying to do. I am trying to make his memory live on.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to this disease on June 1, 2006. This is why I am trying to raise awareness and make the Alpha-One Foundation known and hopefully as with any other disease, find a cure.
This year on May 12th my family and I will be walking to support this cause. We would like to invite all our friends and family to join us. If you are unable to join us it would be greatly appreciated if you can make a donation to the Alpha 1 Foundation. You can forward your donation directly to me or you can donate on firstgiving web page.
I know right now this economy is hard on all of us but anything, ANYTHING will be appreciated.
