I've run marathons before, but this time it's for a good cause. And for my sister.
Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease. A deceivingly simple salt imbalance causes the body to produce thick mucus. Most notably, this clogs the lungs, leading to life-threatening infections and obstructs the pancreas, stopping natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
Twenty years ago, researchers identified the exact gene responsible for CF and thought a cure was imminent. Although the CF life expectancy increased twenty years in those past twenty years, there remains no cure.
Current CF treatment involves costly and time-consuming medications and therapy. While there's been significant progress in the past two decades, it's not enough until there's a cure.
