William was our first born, a real gift from God. His first year of life was challenging only because we were new parents and did not know what we were doing. The real challenges came after his first birthday. He had been walking for several months – but still was not very steady on his feet. I began to notice that he was falling down more. He would walk a couple of steps and fall. I was concerned and made a doctors appointment the next day.
They sent us immediately to Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. A CAT scan was done that afternoon. William was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We were in shock and the roller coast ride began. It was a short ride in comparison to what many people experience. William was diagnosed on May 7, 1998 and went to heaven on May 26, 1998.
As you can imagine the shock of this experience stayed with us for awhile. These kind of things happened to others – you just hear about it and think how awful. Now we knew that brain tumors could happen to anyone – it happened to our family.
My husband and a wonderful family friend, Kelly, had the idea for William’s Walk and Run. They contacted BTFC to see if they would be interested in partnering with us on this mission. Our first walk was in November 1999. Working with BTFC on this event helped with the healing process. Together we all put our energy and focus on helping others. That is what BTFC is all about. With their support groups, children programs and money given to research, they impact lives on a daily basis. I am truly thankful for all that they do and the contribution they have allowed William to give back to this world.
Please consider about helping BTFC help others and also help continue the needed research to end brain tumors.
