The Refugees of the Gaza Region:
The people from Gush Katif were evicted from their homes over 3 years ago and they still need your help. They lost their homes, communities, jobs, businesses, income, synagogues, and schools, absolutely EVERYTHING including the very land they had settled and cultivated for decades.
Israel’s government would like to sweep them under the rug and make them disappear; they do not want to acknowledge the fact that they did so little to prepare for these people who became refugees overnight.
Their list of immediate needs are endless, like diapers, school supplies, books, clothes, cleaning supplies, toiletries, groceries, furnishings, transportation to job interviews, and rent money.
Even as the monies are slowly trickling in to the families, it cannot compensate for lost jobs. But the problem runs even deeper. Only just recently are government agencies beginning to listen, beginning to see how bottomless the hole of need actually is for these refugees. Each family without a home is a world unto itself. Each has its own needs, its own traumas, and its own special difficulties.
In 2007 CFOIC, with our supporters help allocated $300,000 for various needs of the Gush Katif evacuees. It made a substantial difference in the lives of these brave people. In many cases it put whole families back on their feet. But there are still a significant number of people who have no jobs, no homes, not even the basic needs.
This year we would like to raise more money for these refugees. Our job is not finished. If there is no serious intervention to aid these evacuees we will be faced with a major crisis.
The Gush Katif Committee established a welfare mechanism which evaluates the families’ needs and provides the needed relief in different ways. They are asking for our help.
Total Funds Required: $416,000
Food for 150 families $19,800/month or $237,600*; Holiday Assistance for 500 families $275 per family or $137,500; and Monthly Financial Assistance for 100 families $275 per family or $41,500.
* Number breakdown by individual to an estimated $18.90/month, $0.63/day, $0.21/meal.
