Easing the Pain in Ma'aleh Ephraim
The dream of building a home and raising a family in Biblical Israel sometimes
comes with countless complications and even suffering.
No stranger to this dream, the community of Ma’aleh Ephraim’s heavy population of low income families and new immigrants together share the pain of unemployment and limited social service resources. Geographically, the community is quite isolated and ever deteriorating security situation only adds to the feelings of isolation.
The residents have been quite literally devastated, both financially and socially, and more and more of them are turning to the local Social Services for much needed aid.
Ma’aleh Ephraim’s Social Services Department is currently handling 190 cases of need! There are family problems, ranging from marital difficulties, inadequate parenting, violence, and difficulty with the youth; as well as economic problems, including high unemployment and lack of job training.
Some of the children and youth are at high risk and professionals need to step in. After school programs and workshops are arranged to provide solutions to their ever increasing needs, offering them the tools to handle their frustrations.
For parents there is a wonderful project called “Being Parents”, where they and their children enjoy joint workshops under the support of the local school where both sides come to learn how to work on their relationships.
Even the elderly have a center where they can come together for conversation, culture, and some desperately needed caring, with the added advantage of the community actively getting involved.
These community projects are essential for the neighborhood at large, and try to aim at the people of Ma’aleh Ephraim helping themselves as they help each other. The advantage of crisis intervention and prevention is immeasurable. The need is great.
The people of Ma’aleh Ephraim are turning to CFOIC Heartland this year so they can focus on these vital projects.
