For the Gush Katif refugees of Shirat HaYam, their former beachfront community in the Gush Katif bloc of the Gaza region, Maskiot is their future home away from home. Located in the Jordan Valley, this small and barely populated community is eagerly awaiting the refugees; counting on their pioneering spirit to help turn their hilltop home into a vibrant community.
Unfortunately, for these refugees, their journey to their future home is far from over. Forced to leave their permanent homes following the Gush Katif Disengagement of 2005, the Shirat Hayam families were first placed in an abandoned Youth Hotel in Brosh Habika, a neighborhood in the Jordan Valley, as a temporary refuge for several months, then forced again to move to Hemdat, a nearby community, where they are living today in mobile homes.
Promised by the government that their new permanent homes, in Maskiot, would be ready in three-to-six months, the project was frozen indefinitely, as a result of the “Road Map” stipulations, putting their future established residence on hold, leaving them to their run-down and cramped mobile homes in Hemdat.
In spite of the discouraging news, the pioneering spirit of these refugees continues to defy all expectations as they decided to construct their own mobile homes on the future sites of their permanent homes in Maskiot, designated by their government. Needing 20 homes, they are hoping to erect at least 10 of them, which will serve as homes for the families until they are able to build their permanent ones. These structures will be community property and will later be rented out as temporary lodging for new families and provide a source of income for the community.
They are turning to CFOIC Heartland to help cover the cost of one mobile home.
