I have been playing Drums for 31years. Playing Drums kept me out of trouble in my younger years and taught me so much about and all through out life. It has shaped who I am, it has presented me with opporunities that had I not been involved in music I probably never would have had. Playing Drums has taught me the value of hard work, dedication,drive,imagination,independance , teamwork, and desire, as well as tasting failure and success. I have molded my entire life around playing drums and making music....everything I have learned through music I have been able to relate and use in the rest of my life making me successful and a better person. The people that I have met and the relationships i have forged, the places I have been, all the things that I have seen and been a part of I can attribute in some way to playing drums and music.
Many years ago my father told me " Playing drums and music is great, but until you make it to that big time , Don't quit your day job. Drums and music is an expensive life style and if it's not paying the bills then you still have to find away to support your self and your music." At that point I knew that I had to be successful to support my playing if for any reason my playing could not support me. Probably the best example of how playing drums and music hs influenced my life, money doesn't grow on trees!
With that being said, I believe that everyone deserves the same chances and opportunity that I have had for music to influnce,motivate , and inspire my life. This year in the Texas Big Beat I am supporting the Mr.Hollands Opus Foundation.The foundation donates both new and refurbished instruments to school and after-school music programs that lack the resources to keep up with equipment loss due to attrition, depreciation and wear over time, and to accommodate students on waiting lists or who have to share instruments. An infusion of instruments enables more students to participate and to experience a quality music education. It is vital that efforts are made to give young people every tool available to grow ,learn, and experience all of the benefiets that music has to offer.
Most everyone I know at one point or another in their life , musically inclined or not , has made an attempt at playing an instrument or singing. No matter how far it got, the inspiration was there , and there was an education in it, even if it was just for fun. There is no denying that everyone has had that dream of being a superstar, up on stage pouring your heart and soul in to yor music, putting it out there under the stage lights for all to see, craving the roar of the crowd, and that iconic feeling of being a Rock Star. If not TV shows like American Idol or Americas Got Talent wouldn't be so popular.
The dream can be a reality, people live it every day and it only takes two things, inspiration and suport. Inspire a young person to chase the dream, even if only a dream. the life lessons,experiences, and people met along the way are well worth the journey. Most of the time thats what it's about anyway, the journey, when you finally get there what's the first thing people always ask? How did you get there , right? I belive it's human nature that the journey never ends. Just when one ends, another begins. Journey, adventure, call it what you will, music is that never ending quest. Always inspired,always inspiring, motivational,emoional,constant,and co nsistant. Music is always there.

Think about it, seriously, everyhing is better with music. Sports,Movies,Theater,TV,Festivals,Parties,Church,Dinner,Cook out's, Love. I can't hink of anything that music doesn't inspire,enhance, or motivate. Can you imagine a day with out music? Can you think of a day that you didn't involve music in your routine in one way or another. I bet you can't.

Be an inspiration, give back some of what the music and musicians have given to you. Give support and help a young aspiring musician realise an opportunity to experience the dream or at least the journey and what it has to offer as an inspiration and education in life.
