Southern Arizona Network for Down Syndrome - Tucson Buddy Walk

2008 Tucson Buddy Walk

Kris Levario's Fundraising Page

We became parents to our first child with Down syndrome in December 2000. We did not have a pre-natal diagnosis, and learned the day she was born about her disability.  We had plenty of love and later incredible respect for our sweet daughter. Everything we had taken for granted with our other five “typical” children, we worked with and fought for with Meghan. She never gave up and learned to roll over, to sit unassisted, to stand and to walk. Today her greatest challenge is expressive language, but she continues to work hard at that as well.

It was because of Meghan that we learned of a special ministry; Reece’s Rainbow, that helped children with Down syndrome find forever families. Our love of Meghan and our other children impelled us to pursue international adoption. We simply could not abide the terrible truth of these children’s lives, that without a family they would live out their lives in special needs orphanages or mental institutions. Some so unspeakable, that we weep for the children forced to live there.

For that reason, attending Buddy Walk has even more meaning for our family.  This year we have two new wonderful daughters; Kara, adopted from Ukraine November 2007 and Amanda, adopted from Estonia June 2008.  Both girls were living in orphanages since birth; left there by brokenhearted parents whom did not have the resources to raise them, especially not in countries where people with disabilities are not accepted.

Both girls now have a chance to grow up and grow old with a family to love them.  We are blessed to have the privilege to be that family, our joy in having two new daughters hard to express in words. We are so grateful to everyone who helped this miracle come to be.

We are walking to raise money to help support SANDS, which in turn supports The Down Syndrome Connection, the support group we have belonged to since 2001.

SANDS has done and continues to do so much for our local Down syndrome community. Please give generously to this very special organization.
