On November 12, 2011 my family will once again be holding the annual Pancakes for Pancreatic Cancer. Our event includes a breakfast, silent auction/raffle, bake sale and more! If you cannot attend the event but, would like to make a donation, this is the place to do it!
We originally started this event in memory of my dad, Ron Gutmann, who lost his fight with pancreatic cancer on August 31, 2002. He was only diagnosed 6 months prior to that. Since the first event though, we have met many others who have had a family member or friend also fight this terrible cancer. Some are still fighting, many have also lost the fight. We want this event to memorialize all those who have lost the battle to pancreatic cancer AND to honor all those who are still fighting it.
Pancreatic cancer is a brutal cancer. The statistics are not fair. Even though Pancreatic cancer is amongst the top 5 cancer killers, it only receives 2% of the funding from the National Cancer Institute. Of all the cancers tracked by both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Insitute, pancreatic cancer is the only one with a relative 5 year survival rate in the single digits. 94% of patients die within the first year of diagnosis! In 2011 it is estimated that 44,030 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 37,660 will die from the disease. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!
Pancreatic cancer research is where breast cancer research was 40 YEARS AGO!! THIS TOO IS UNACCEPTABLE!!
It is time to change the statistics! It is time for more reseach!
KNOW IT. FIGHT IT. END IT.
