San Antonio Rock-n-Roll Marathon | Team Benjamin and Tiny Sparrow Angels

San Antonio, Texas

Over a decade ago, I ran the Army 10-miler and subsequently swore I'd never run that far again unless someone was chasing me. Well, someone is chasing me. That someone is Benjamin Gamez, son of Christina Gamez and Pablo Gamez - with his heartbreakingly short but treasured time on earth, impossibly beautiful face, everything he is and was, and the Tiny Sparrow Foundation that helped capture the essence of Gamez Love. He's chasing me to San Antonio, and another 13.1 miles once I get there. Please help me to honor Benjamin and provide this gift to other families as I run for {Hope} by donating here.

I am running the Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 marathon on November 11, 2012 in support of my dear friends, Pablo and Christina and the Tiny Sparrow Foundation that gave them comfort in their time of need.  Below is their story:

Pablo and I are so excited to be team captains in the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon and Half, representing the Tiny Sparrow Foundation. This foundation has been a tremendous support to our family; I hardly know where to begin...

We learned, even before our son was born, that he wouldn't be on Earth with us for nearly as long as a parent would wish their child to be. With the incredibly complex congenital heart condition confined to his little body, we really didn't know what our futures would hold once diagnosed. On June 22, 2011, when Benjamin Lewis Gamez was born, we held him every second of every day and truly cherished every single moment we were blessed to spend together.

After learning about TSF from Mary Beth Thomsen (she volunteers for the organization), a dear friend who we've known since high school, we decided to schedule a family photo session arranged by Susan Posterro, Tiny Sparrow Family Liaison. The one hour photo session on Friday, October 21st was at the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, VA, about 3 weeks before Benjamin’s open heart surgery. It was an absolutely amazing fall day. Benjamin was so happy and full of energy that afternoon. And Nicholas, his older brother, was too. The session was amazing. Shey Detterlin of Shey Marin Photography was so wonderful. Her graceful presence and creative eye captured amazing moments. Her genuine personality and easy spirit helped us all to feel free -- and act natural -- as if she wasn't even there. The moments that she captured take my breath away.

TSF sent us sneak peek pictures and then, with our permission, posted our story on Tiny Sparrow’s website. Seeing our story in print where so many people were able to meet our sweet Benjamin and find out about his condition, gave us a huge sense of happiness and relief. They told our story when we could barely speak of it to our own family and closest friends. We wanted the world to meet our amazing Benjamin, and hear our story; Tiny Sparrow Foundation did just that.

After the world was introduced to our ‘Ben-G’ ~ we felt a tremendous influx of love and support. We received a beautiful album from our photography session that we cherish and look through every day. We have family pictures scattered throughout our house that are everlasting memories of a truly happy day in our family’s history. We are forever grateful to TSF, not only for precious pictures and an amazing album, but for the incredible support and love they have brought to our family during a most difficult time.

We’d be humbled for you to participate in our Run for Hope -- to remember our sweet Benjamin and honor all of the Tiny Sparrows that are out there. So many children are sick and fighting every day just to make it to the next. This run is for those children, for their incredibly courageous parents and families, and to remind us to cherish each and every moment we have together. Together, we will Run for Hope in the name of Ben-G, who earned his angel wings on December 5, 2011.

Whether you are running the full or ½ marathon, volunteering in our booth, donating money, or offering continued support ~ our grateful hearts thank you.

Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
