PHOENIX CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon 2009

Kris Kiefer: Miracles In Motion

Welcome to my Miracles in Motion Personal Fundraising Page.  I am once again trying to complete the P.F. Chang's 1/2 marathon, all the while raising money to help the kids at PCH, like my Honor Patient Nick Thau.  Nick is 7 years old, and he's a huge baseball fan.  With the assistance of his wonderful family and his big brother Chris, Nick plays ball in the Arizona Miracle League.  (check out some great pics here http://caringbridge.org/visit/nicholasthau).  He's pretty excited because the season just started backup on Thursday, September 25.  Unfortunately, Nick also faces some unique challenges.  He was born with Kernicterus, a rare condition caused by Jaundice.  Because of this he has CP, he is deaf, visually impaired and has epilepsy.  Nonetheless, he is a happy, loving and courageous kid.  Throughout it all, PCH has been a wonderful source of healing for Nick and his family during some very difficult times.  Please consider sponsoring me and the kids at PCH, like Nick.

If you are interested, you may sponsor me through this site.  It is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to my fundraising efforts.  And, as always, if you can't contribute monetarily, I can always use the encouragement.  Many thanks for your support!

Kris

BLOG:

8/23/08:  First group run at Kiwanis Park 6am.  We ran 5 miles.  Although it was early and the group seems really nice, the heat is brutal.  Finished in just under an hour and then downed gatorade and slept the rest of the morning.  Hopefully, this will get easier...

9/4/08:  Was assigned my honor patient today: Nicholas Thau!  Nick is a great kid, with a wonderful family.  He's 7 years old, and has CP, epilepsy, is deaf, and visually impaired.  PCH has been a huge help to him and his family.  Nick loves one of my favorites, baseball, and plays in the Arizona Miracle League!  Sarah and I are going to catch one of his games this fall, so check back for pictures.

9/13/08:  Finally starting to cool down.  With the monsoon winding down, I think it will be really nice to run in the mornings.  We had a great group run turnout, and I survived the 5 miles down the canal.  We'll see how it goes next weekend running in chilly upstate NY, as Sarah and I have a wedding to attend in the Cuse.

9/23/08:  The trip to upstate NY was great, and the weather was perfect for running.  On Saturday I hit up the Onondaga Lake Parkway for a 6.5 miler.  The weather was brisk and sunny.  The only adventurous part was getting caught up in the middle of two different races that day.  I was the slow guy getting passed by everyone wearing race numbers.  On Monday, I took a scenic run through the corn fields near Sarah's parent's house.  It was great, despite the stare down I got from one of the bulls in the nearby field.  Now the training continues back in PHX.

9/30/08:  Today, a challenge.  One of my colleagues, Jim Sienicki, has offered an additional $50 to PCH if I can run the race in under an hour and thirty minutes.  WOW!  I'm not sure what to say.  Guess I can't back down from the challenge, but I'm going to have to get after it.  Right now I'm about at a 10 minute pace, that means I'll have to cut 3 minutes per mile!  Here we go...

10/4/08: Sarah and I were able to make it out to the Arizona Miracle League's DreamCatcher Park to see one of Nick's games.  It was awesome!  Nick's mom, Chrissy, coaches the Rangers, his dad, Carl, helped Nick field and hit, and his brother, Chris, played catcher.  It was a great day.  Nick even hit a homerun!

10/19/08:  Group run mileage is going up.  Was supposed to do 9 miles, somehow ended up dong 10.5.  Feel pretty good though, guess now I have to start shaving a few minutes off of my time.
