MOM'S DIAGNOSIS - In December of 2007, my Mom, Patti Owens, was diagnosed with breast cancer. It wasn't long before doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to lymph nodes in her chest and to her lungs. Little did we know that she has been living with this for well over 8 years! Research has shown that the accuracy of mammograms is 67%, in detecting cancer in the breast. This is why research is so crucial. Doctors have classified her as Stage IV. Due to other health issues, she was unable to undergo chemotherapy so they tried hormone therapy first. In May of  2011, her cancer had become resistant to the hormone treatment & the cancer spread to her rib & liver. A second drug was tried May - July, but was ineffective. As of August, 2011, her cancer has spread to a lymph node in her neck, to her spine, another rib and has reappeared in lymph nodes in her chest, which had been inactive for almost 3 years. She is undergoing radiation right now (2/6/2012). This is her second radiation treatment. Her body began to reject the first round of chemotherapy (pill form) so they have backed her off chemo and are trying radiation to the lower portion of her spine. This is an area where the cancer seems to be prevelant. After her radiation is finished, she'll begin a lower dose for her second round of chemo (also in pill form). We are praying that the chemotherapy works and that her energy level increases. She has been very sick, tired and out of energy as a result of the chemo and radiation. I will continue to offer updates as I can.
