It’s been a tough two years; attacks on women’s reproductive privacy, attempts to weaken child labor protections, rollbacks of Maine’s unemployment insurance system, deep cuts to basic social service programs like general assistance and MaineCare, I could go on. Nothing has been sacred in the 125th legislature.
At the Maine Women’s Policy Center we have persevered. Our Girls Day at the State House program has continued and this year we celebrated our 16th year. Once again, we brought 100 girls from across the state together to learn about state policy-making and empower them to find their voice and create change. As one participant wrote: “I learned that it’s important to take risks, and stand up and speak out for what you believe in.”
The Maine Women’s Policy Center is a part of MaineShare, an organization that facilitates workplace giving for many very cool non-profits. Every year members have the opportunity to raise some funds thru the virtual Hike & Bike.
Therefore, I’m fleeing to the woods, 100 miles of wilderness between Monson and Baxter State Park to be exact. On June 2nd I’ll be hitting the Appalachian Trail and hiking 10 days to the foot of Maine’s greatest mountain, the people’s mountain, Mt. Katahdin.
Will you help me get there? Please consider not only supporting my hike (and my long awaited break from the toughest session of my career) but also supporting MaineShare & the Maine Women’s Policy Center.
Please make a pledge today of $100 (only $1 per mile!) or $50, or whatever feels right to you.
Thank you so much for your support!
