The Facts
- Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in our country. 30,000 people are lost to suicide per year in the US alone.
- Among people of ages 15 to 24, it is the 3rd leading cause of death (both nationwide and in MA).
- Each year, 20% of Boston public high school students seriously contemplate suicide and 10% actually attempt it.
- The suicide rate among the elderly is 50% higher than that of all other age groups.
There is Hope!
The Samaritans of Boston are working hard to reduce the risk of suicide and increase awareness about suicide prevention. Through the five programs described below, the Samaritans help thousands of people in our community:
- 24-Hour Helpline: Volunteers answer over 100,000 calls annually from
people in search of unconditional and non-judgmental support
- Samariteens: A teen-to-teen helpline for young people seeking peer
support as they face the emotional challenges of adolescence
- Community Education and Outreach: Training workshops offered to
schools, professional groups, and other organizations to teach risk
assessment and suicide prevention strategies, as well as to educate
community leaders on how to respond in the aftermath of a suicide
- Grief Support: Services and support groups for those who have lost a
loved one to suicide
- “Lifeline” Inmate Outreach: A unique face-to-face suicide prevention and
intervention program focused on select correctional facilities in the greater
Boston area
