I am so excited to be writing you again to tell you about my experience thus far with Citizen Schools. A year ago when I set up my Firstgiving page I had just started in my position as Manager of Individual Giving on Citizen Schools National Development team. I was excited and eager to hit the ground running. One year later, I still love it here. I am now much more comfortable here, I understand the ed-reform jargon that sometimes confused me a year ago, and I feel extremely lucky to be surrounded by such great colleagues.
Last summer, one of my colleagues encouraged me to teach an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship is Citizen Schools signature program where a regular person like you or I is able to go into a middle school classroom once a week for 10 weeks and teach the students. My friend Julia and I decided to teach "Around the World." We taught students about France, Australia, Japan, China, and Brazil. We brought in foods and games that corresponded with each country-the students loved it. It was amazing to see kids who hadn't thought of traveling suddenly realize how many possibilities await them. It was also wonderful to hear them get excited about talking about their own culture. Through the games, they learned about diversity, and began to appreciate every one's difference.
This year, about 4000 regular people will get to become a second shift teacher once a week for 10 weeks. Their dedication to the students they meet will help the students realize all the opportunities that are within their reach that they may not have realized if not for Citizen Schools. Thank you so much for reading-and I hope you will consider supporting me and this important cause!
