Hi! I have exciting news! I am running the New York City Marathon on November 1, 2009 in support of National Stroke Association, the only national nonprofit organization to focus 100% of its efforts on stroke. I have decided to take on the ambitious task of running 26.2 miles because I care deeply about raising awareness of stroke, a leading cause of death and adult disability that is up to 80% preventable. I am inviting you to come on this journey with me!

On April 16, 2005, I had a stroke at the age of 39 (now you know how old I am!)  I was watching TV after feeding my infant son and fell flat on my face when I tried to get up and go to bed.  I had lost all use of my left leg and rushed to the hospital with no idea what was happening to me.  I happened to go to a hospital that did NOT have a 24-hour stroke team in place, which caused a lot of misdiagnosis and delayed treatment.  Fortunately, I was eventually able to find proper medical care and a wonderful doctor, Dr. Perre Fayad - stroke specialist at The Nebraska Medical Center - that was able to diagnose my very rare medical condition that lead to the stroke.  I am lucky and blessed to be able to raise my 3 boys and to be doing well enough to run this marathon for the thousands who were not so lucky.


Running to support National Stroke Association is a fantastic way for me to help spread awareness. For the last 25 years, National Stroke Association has created programs and educational initiatives that align with its mission of reducing the incidence and impact of stroke. National Stroke Association has been influential not only in the lives of stroke survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals but also in educating the public about stroke.


I am putting one foot in front of the other, at a pace hopefully faster than walking, for 26.2 miles in an effort to support National Stroke Association.
