Action for Healthy Kids is the nation’s leading nonprofit and largest volunteer network fighting childhood obesity and undernourishment by helping schools become healthier places. Our kids learn to eat right, be active every day and be ready to learn. Our mission is to engage diverse organizations, leaders and volunteers in actions that foster sound nutrition and good physical activity in children, youth and schools. The influence of our organization can change school wellness policies and programs that teach our children about eating healthy and being active every day. The Arizona Steering Committee is pleased
to announce we are launching our efforts to fulfill this mission here in the valley in a partnership with the Fowler School District.
The Fowler School District is comprised of seven schools serving 4,656 students pre-kindergarten through eighth grade with the majority of students receiving free or reduced lunches each day. Our organization has partnered with the Sun Canyon Elementary School in the Fowler School District to launch our school outreach efforts.
On Wednesday, April 27, 2011, we have an Arizona Action for Healthy Kids Day of Service at the Sun Canyon Elementary School. After visiting the school we have found a few projects that are going to help promote sound nutrition and physical activity for the students at this school. The kids will be able to enjoy our event by participating in a taste testing of various fruits, vegetables and dairy products. We would like to revitalize the map of the United States of America painted on their playground. This map will receive a fresh coat of paint and regional agricultural highlights will be added to showcase food grown in the USA. The final project will be to plant a sustainable garden for the kids to learn more about this community’s historic agricultural heritage.
We are seeking the support and funding from businesses to ensure our first Action for Healthy Kids Day of Service at the Sun Canyon Elementary School will be a success.
