World Vision - Walk Their Walk

Walk Their Walk 2009
Training buddies: Bound Brook Presbyterian Church

Linda Owens's Fundraising Page

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!

I am participating again in the WALK THEIR WALK 5 K event at Somerset County's Duke Island Park on Saturday, November 14 at 9 AM.  If you can't come out and join us, please consider donating to the event which benefits World Vision's work in Twachiyanda, Zambia.  Here is the story of our work in Zambia ...

It started with the junior high youth group at the Bound Brook Presbyterian Church.  In 2003 they determined to make a difference for children struggling with the affects of HIV/AIDS in Zambia.  Their passion and determination influenced the life of entire congregation at BBPC.  Over the course of six years, inspired by their enthusiasm, the congregation has built a home for a family affected by HIV/AIDS,  sponsored over 100 children in Twachiyanda and built two wells for villages there all through the our partners, World Vision.  In 2007, fourteen members of the congregation, both youth and adults, traveled to Zambia to visit Twachiyanda, meet some of the sponsored children and to see what else needed to be done to ease the pain of suffering that extreme poverty and HIV/AIDS has produced.

While we were there we were overwhelmed by the warm welcome we received.  We were greeted with singing and dancing and surrounded by beautiful children with hope-filled eyes.  We were amazed at how remote and isolated this part of Zambia was ... villages connected by narrow,  pot-filled, dirt roads.  We were humbled by the poverty we saw.  To think one deep-water well for a village of 300 was considered a luxury! And yet that is what we celebrated on our visit, the drilling of a well from funds we had raised for the village of Chilala.  For the first time woman and girls needed only to walk less than a mile for clean water.  In the past collecting water was an all day event, one that made it impossible for many young girls to have both the time and the resources to attend school.  But now that has changed.  In addition the well has enabled the village to create a bountiful community garden and the runoff from the well has become a watering hple for cattle.  Not to mention the health benefits that come from clean drinking water.  To make a long story short … we love our extended family in Twachiyanda and we are committed to the work of World Vision there.

There are many more villages in Twachiyanda that desperately need access to clean water and adequate sanitation.  Walk their Walk is our effort to continue the work of World Vision in Twachiyanda, Zambia.  By the way, you won’t find Twachiyanda on the map.  It is the name given to region where World Vision has agreed to work.  In this case “Twachiyanda” was the name given by local leaders in response to World Vision’s offer to help.  It means “we have liked the idea!”

Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
