Help Saba's Family Meet their Grocery Needs for 1 Year!

Help Saba's Family Meet their Grocery Needs for 1 Year!

Sometime back, I inquired about Saba's family. I asked about educational needs and also interest in an income generating project.. I asked for these things specifically after meeting Saba and her mom at their home in January 2011. While there, I realized how difficult things were for Saba and her family. Saba and her siblings are struggling in school, her oldest brother had to drop out to help support the family. Saba'a mother cried and hugged me and thanked me for all that I have done to help her daughter.

I asked if the family was interested in doing a income generating project, but the report stated that the family does not feel "confident" enough to do a project right now. Her father is a daily laborer and her mom is a housewife. I don't know for sure, but I think they may both be illiterate, and therefore not feel confident in starting something on their own. Instead, they asked for help in providing monthly groceries for a year. The cost (as of the report, in March 2011) for this is:

For one month:
20 kgs of rice- $11
5 kgs of flour- $2
2 kgs of lentils- $3
2 litres of cooking oil- $4
1 litre of white oil- $1

That is $21 per month X 12 months= $252. I have added in extra for the firstgiving fee and the admin fee for special gifts, as well as hopefully a bit extra in case prices have gone up since then.

I think that this will really help the family a lot-- You can see in the photo how extremely small and thin 12 year old Saba is. Her family currently makes about $53 a month. If they pay $21 for these groceries every month, that leaves them with only $31 for rent, additional food such as vegetables, fruit, or meat, school, health, clothing, etc. Wirh this help, her family of 6 would have food security and be able to feel more confident to plan for the future!
