For 35 years, Housing Assistance Corporation has strived to meet one goal: Everyone should have a safe, stable and affordable place to live.
Lately, this goal seems to be harder and harder to acheive. First, the economy tanked. People lost their jobs, their savings, and soon, their homes. Businesses are collapsing. They can't afford to pay people a living wage, and families on the Cape & Islands are suffering.
If that wasn't enough, the State decided to cut the one program that was really working, Residential Assistance to Families in Transition (RAFT). This program would provide families with a one-time small amount of financial assistance to help dig them out of a hole until they were back on their feet. It paid back rent, security deposits, utility bills, mortgage payments. It kept families from losing their housing. It worked wonders.
So, no more funding for that! Again. And we're back to square one. All we have to work with is donations. We still do what we do, because HAC's commitment to the cause somehow manages to keep going cut after cut, but we need everyone's help to make it happen!
This is HAC's last year doing the Walk. So, I won't be asking again next year. Please do what you can and help.
