What is Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition caused when an individual ends up with 3 copies of Chromosome 21 instead of 2. The extra genetic material creates a variety of changes in the typical physical and cognitive development of the individual and the results vary. (For more information on Down syndrome, visit  NDSC or NDSS

Accomplishments

Over the last year with help from the Buddy Walk funds, we've been able to:

send information, resources and support packages to new parents of children with Down syndrome;

get the Restraints and Seclusion Act (

Provide school resource packs to school age children with Down syndrome and their families to improve their educational outcomes;

form alliances with the school system (district and local level) to ensure that Children with Down syndrome have access to the General Education Curriculum just like other children (while providing teacher development) which in turn improves their outlook on life;

support the development of the ARC Center of Excellence;

provide self-advocates the opportunity to speak for themselves in our nation's capital about their experiences and the impact of various pieces of legislature on their lives

make break throughs in research around cognition (See

To name a few.

HR 4247) passed in the House of Representatives in Washington on March 3, 2010 (to protect children from danger while in school custody);DSRTF);

Why I do It

Because I know first hand how Down syndrome impacts families

Because I want to leave the world a better place than I found it for those who (through no fault of their own) are less privileged than I have been

The next time you meet someone with Down syndrome, remember there is more than meets the eye and
