Over the last couple of years I have spent time working with an outstanding group of people on a non-profit called Solar Richmond (www.solarrichmond.org) . Solar Richmond is working towards more solar installations and the creation of green collar jobs in Richmond. I've seen Michele McGeoy's crazy idea germinate and gradually grow into something marvelous. Here are some of the things that we have done over the years:
- Organized Solar Home Tours
- Worked with the city to change permit fees for Solar
- Worked with Grid Alternatives, Green For All, Richmond Build to install solar on homes of low-income seniors
- Developed an outstanding Green Collar Job Training program with Richmond Build
- Placed our graduates in jobs within the Solar Industry
- Created a Solar Training center
The press has covered our programs and you can find more information here:
Solar Richmond Press Coverage. As you can see, Solar Richmond has done some pioneering work.
Also, there is huge demand for Green Collar Workers --
SF Chronicle Article. Our programs are designed to fulfill this need.
The way I see it, putting another Policeman/policewoman on the streets of Richmond will probably cost $120,000/year. For $120,000 we can train 30-50 youth in Richmond and give them a chance to work in a growing industry. Over time the view of Richmond will change, we will no longer see refineries but will see solar panels.
I truly believe in this program. I'm on the board, volunteered time and have also contributed financially. Amidst all the other excitement at the National level, there is Real Change taking place right in our midst. Come, be a part of that change :)
We have a strong Privacy Policy and will not share your information with others. Your contributions are tax-deductible.
