As an International Club at Ithaca College, we decided that it was time for us not only to spread awareness of the state of education in third world countries with an emphasis on Nepal but also resolved to make a difference in ways we thought achievable.
As part of our efforts to disseminate awareness about contemporary issues relating to education in Nepal we plan to: host a lecture on challeges of providing education in third world countries, a photo exhibition, and show the documentary films 'Born into Brothels' and 'Schools in Crossfire'.
Event Schedule:
1. 'Born into Brothels' - 7th April 2006, 7pm at Ithaca College Textor 101: FREE Screening. Oscar Winning Documentary and a portrait of several unforgettable children of prostitutes who work in the Red Light District of Calcutta, India.
2. Christopher London - 13th April 2006, 7pm at Ithaca College Textor 102: Director of Educate the Children International. Ph.D from Cornell University. Discussion on global political economy and the history of development, the specific problems and development interventions in a third world country.
3. 'Schools in the Crossfire' - 14th April 2006, 7pm at Ithaca College Textor 101: FREE Screening. A captivating documentary on the 'People's War' of the Communist Party in Nepal (Maoists), and the ravaging effects of the war on the education system in Nepal. 'Schools in the Crossfire' goes deep into the battle zones and discovers the unenviable situation of the teachers and students as they learn to survive between the army and the rebels.
