Please sponsor me in the upcoming 2012 Police Unity Tour! This is my first time, and I am honored to be a part of it.
It is a 250+ mile bike ride from Portsmouth, Virginia to the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in Washington DC in honor of Law Enforcement Officers who were killed in the line of duty. There were 173 line of duty deaths this year, 68 were firearm related.
As we all know from the past year, the U.S. Marshals Service suffered two great losses with the deaths of Deputy United States Marshal Derek Hotsinpiller and Senior Inspector John Perry in the line of duty. This year both of their names will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC during National Police Week in May 2012.
I plan to ride for a Miami Dade Police Task Force Officer that was part of our fugitive task force. Detectives Amanda Haworth and Roger Castillo were shot and killed while serving a felony warrant on a man wanted for murder. Upon making contact with an occupant of the home, someone inside immediately opened fire, striking Detective Castillo and Detective Haworth. Another detective on the scene returned fire and killed the suspect.
Detective Castillo succumbed to his wounds at the scene. Detective Haworth was transported to a local hospital where she passed away during surgery.
