As many of you know, my son Salvatore has suffered from bulimia for the past 6 years.It is an eating disorder where you eat large quantities of food and then purge. He abuses and overuses laxatives as well as diet pills.This disorder is now considered a mental illness. The disorder has taken a terrible toll on his body.He is unable to feel comfortable in his own body. He has been hospitalized many times at New York Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains Eating Disorder Unit. He has been to 3 residential settings for treatment:Center for Discovery in California,Rogers Memorial Hospital in Wisconsin and Rosewood Center for Eating Disorders in  Arizona. He has seen numerous therapists, psychiatrists and nutritionists. Sal is still struggling and he has a very long road of recovery in front of him. 

There are very few places in the United States that will treat males. My insurance company only covers in network facilities that are for females. I have spent hours and hours on the phone fighting the insurance company.Even with the insurance the expense of treatment is tremendous.

My goal is to make people aware of this disorder .Through the National Eating Disorder Association NEDA, I have found support. They sponsored me to attended the NEDA conference in Oct. 2010. I was given so much information on this illness. I have also been in contact with NEDA navigators. These are people that offer you resources and support. NEDA has now moved their office to NYC. I'm hoping that there will be more resources in this area.

I will be running the More Fitness Half Marathon in Central Park, NY on April 15, 2012 for NEDA. This will be my 3rd year running this half marathon. I'm doing this for the love of Sal. Again I'm asking you my family, friends, and coworkers to donate to this very special organization. Any donation to NEDA will help with research, resources and support to families whom have a loved one that suffers from this disorder. I don't want anyone else to have to go through what we have...What doesn't kill us will make us stronger.....
