Marissa Van Rooy's Fundraising Page
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
I have decided to run my very first marathon, The Marine Corps Marathon, on October 25, 2009 on behalf of a wonderful organization, the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF). CFCF is the leading non-profit working to find a cure for carcinoid cancer and providing support services and awareness to patients and physicians. As part of my commitment to be on the CFCF team, I have promised to raise atleast $1,000. The funds raised by CFCF support their mission of discovering a cure for carcinoid and other neuroendocrine tumors.
What is carcinoid cancer?
Carcinoid cancer is a term used to refer to tumors that originate in the nerve cells that produce hormones, also known as the neuroendocrine system. Because tumors are slow-growing and release hormones that result in a wide range of symptoms, early diagnosis often does not occur in patients end up suffering longer than they should. No early diagnostic test or surveillance exists in carcinoid cancer. In contrast to other cancers, carcinoid is increasing in incidence and prevalence.
Right now there is no cure and limited treatment options for patients.
I decided to join the CFCF team along with my friends, "The Marathon Sisters: Megan and Stephanie" whose father was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer. This is each of our first marathons and we've decided to do something about finding a cure!
Please know that 100% of your donation goes directly to research (not overhead expenses) for carcinoid and other related neuroendocrine cancers, so you can be confident that you are making a real difference in the lives of patients and their families. Making donations through this site is quick and secure. Thank you so much for your support!
