Its time for the 7th Annual Tucson Buddy Walk, our first, and we could not be more excited, the walk is on October 26th, 2008, 2pm-6pm at Reid Park, just two days shy of Mateo’s first birthday. The Buddy Walk is a one mile walk which promotes inclusion, awareness and funding sources.
The Tucson Buddy Walk raises funds for the Southern Arizona Network for Down syndrome (SANDS www.sandsaz.org), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization created to improve and enrich the lives of those with Down syndrome.

As you all know, we were told the day after Mateo was born that the doctors believed he had Down syndrome, it was confirmed a week later, Trisomy 21, the most common type of Down syndrome. Needless to say we thought our world had been torn apart, just because of one extra chromosome, how wrong we were!! We did a lot of research and met with a lot of people. With the support of our family and friends we quickly got back on our feet and realized that nothing had really changed we had a baby who needed to be taken care of just like when Diego was a baby. We’ve faced challenges but that’s parenthood! It’s opened our lives up to meet people we probably would have never met before, it’s like being part of an exclusive club where you have to know somebody to get in, but everyone is instantly accepting.
Mateo is now 11 months, he has a smile that lights up his whole face and body. His favorite person in the whole world is his big brother, Diego, he can make him laugh like no one else can. We call him ‘Tater’ or ‘our little goat’ -because he loves to eat paper, especially newspaper. He can sit up, crawl and has stood up a couple times. He has weekly physical and occupation therapy and does speech therapy about once a month, which may sound rigorous, but its more play than therapy and early intervention is very important!
