Why I am walking on April 28th, 2012?

16 years ago today (April 4) a cute brown bundle of fur was born! This handsome little guy was one of ten pups born to mommie lab “Star”. Star was blessed with 8 charcoal black and only 2 chocolate brown lab babies! Lobo was the only male chocolate brown lab and he was very upset to be taken away from his siblings at the tender age of 8 weeks old. His new mommy was so ecstatic to bring him to his new home, which was a brand new beautiful 40 x 40 pen with lots of shade and a fancy hand-built modern dog house with real siding and a roof with shingles... just like mommy’s house!! But Lobo was so lonely in his pen. He cried and howled for 3 straight days, and nights. His new mommy was thrilled to have this new bundle of joy but was losing lots of sleep! So, baby Lobo was brought in the house to live. And he was happy. And mommy was happy…. and slept…. sometimes! Puppy training, as anyone knows, is a 24-hour round-the-clock ADVENTURE!!! But boy I wouldn’t have traded those puppy years for anything! Lobo was such a GOOD puppy. He never did anything bad…. NOT! Well, not on purpose anyway, and he was always forgiven. He did “puppy” things… like chewing things he wasn’t supposed to, eating things he wasn’t suppose to, and not letting me know in time when he needed to go out… ok, that one was probably my fault for just not paying attention. But he was a quick learner and always a joy!
Being Lobo’s “mom” was the best and I learned many things too!
I’m not sure who came up with this list of things we can learn from our dogs. If I did I would surely give them credit here because it is SO true!

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps and stretch before rising.
Run, romp and play daily.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you've had enough.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout ...run right back and make friends.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Lobo did every one of these things! Sadly, he passed over the Rainbow Bridge on Dec. 23, 2011. We miss him terribly! But he is still in our hearts and we know he lived a long good life and I am convinced now that he is in doggie heaven still doing these same things! Only with no more pain and with boundless energy!

I am walking April 28th in memory of Lobo, and in support of all pets that need help, comfort, a home, and love.
Please consider walking with us, or making a contribution.
For those that have already committed to walk with us and/or have contributed, Lobo and I THANK YOU!
See you on the 28th!!
Love, Mary Jean
