Well if last year wasn’t enough, here I go again !!!!!!! I will be participating in the 2ND ANNUAL SUPER PLUNGE FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS. What is that you ask? Well, I will be plunging ONCE AN HOUR, EVERY HOUR, for 24 HOURS into the ICY WATERS OF LAKE MICHIGAN to raise money and awareness for over 20,000 Special Olympic Athletes here in
Illinois .
I have been involved with Special Olympics Illinois and Special Olympics Athletes for the past 18 years. I can say that I have made some great friends over the years that have changed my life and my way of thinking. I truly admire each and every athlete who participates in Special Olympics. In my book they all deserve Gold Medals for their bravery.
Let me recap for you last years plunge. It turned out to be a very sunny windy cold day. As a matter of fact before the day was over it ended up being the coldest day in all of 2006. We took our initial plunge at 2 pm where news media and some brave observers turned out to witness the beginning of a very crazy 24 hours. By the third plunge, at 4 pm, the forecast was indicating that we could see temperatures in the next 12 hours reach zero or below. Hence we began to brave the icy water twice an hour to be sure we made the 24 total plunges for the event.
As evening fell, of course so did the temperatures, but we PLUNGED ahead. At 8 pm the temperature was right at 0 degrees and the wind chill had the feel of -35 degrees. We did our 14th and 15th plunges then postponed the event until morning. So we settled in for the remainder of the night in our tent on the beach at
Northwestern
University and waited till morning to see what the weather had in store.
The following morning we woke up to an ice shelf that extended 30 yards out from the beach, making it impossible to continue our quest to make the 24 plunges. We packed up belongings with the disappointment that we were not able to accomplish our goal of 24 plunges.
The great part however is that we did raise a significant amount of awareness for our cause. We received coverage on all the local news stations, we did “on air” interviews, and we were even seen nationally on the Weather Channel. Did I forget to mention we did raise a significant amount of money for our athletes. So with that being said it is time to do this all over again for a cause that is near and dear to my heart and the hearts of Law Enforcement Officers all over the world.
I will ask that you support me in my efforts by making a donation for our athletes. Your sponsorship can be made directly through this “secure” web site. All donations directly benefit Special Olympics Illinois.
Please send this page to everyone on your e-mail list to help expand awareness for Special Olympics and raise some funds too.
In return for your donation I will be willing to take a plunge, wearing an article of clothing with a logo representing your business. I promise to provide you with a photo of me taking the plunge wearing the clothing you provide.
