MAYDAY PIT BULL RESCUE & ADVOCACY

Summary

Peanut is just a year old and already on the verge of being unable to walk. She has luxating patella in both knees, which means her kneecaps pop out of place. It’s very painful. Because of this, she sits with both of her back knees bent inward.

Halle is about 2 1/2 years old. One of her hips was replaced sometime in her life, but it was done so badly that it now needs to be redone — this time by a much better surgeon. Without the operation, she could be unable to walk in just a few months.

Mayday Pit Bull Rescue desperately needs your help to pay for these operations.

To say thanks, we’ll send you newsletter updates — including photos and video — so you can see with your own eyes the difference you’ve made in both their lives.

The full story

Peanut was taken in by a kind couple who found her sitting at the doorstep of their neighbor’s house. She’d been sitting there for two days, but she didn’t belong to the neighbor. She was just 12 weeks old, and she was lost — a puppy with no family.

Mayday took Peanut in when the couple found themselves unable to cover the veterinary costs of her two luxating patellas, a birth defect which now causes Peanut’s kneecaps to pop out of place. Peanut is now a year old, and her knees are so fragile that she has to hold up one back leg while struggling to balance on the other. That’s why we need your help.

The amazing Dr. Pullen, founder of and chief surgeon at the Animal Medical and Surgical Center in Scottsdale, is offering us an enormous discount on the cost of the surgery — during which he’ll repair both knees at once. He is generously lowering the cost from $6,000 to about $3,500. But it’s still a lot of money, and we’re desperate to raise it.

=====
Halle was taken in by Mayday’s own foster parents Robert and Christine, who found her in front of their house as she was being chased down by Phoenix Police. She was underweight and covered in tiny tics, and she limped on her back left leg. Halle is now in great health, but the scar on her back leg and her protruding hip bone had us all wondering what had happened to her. To find out why, we took her to Dr. Pullen.

Upon seeing the x-rays, Dr. Pullen said, “In 44 years of practice, I’ve never seen anything like this.”

It turns out that Halle had surgery on her left hip earlier in her young life. But the operation was badly botched. The procedure involves removing the femoral head and reworking the bones so that they fit together properly. In Halle’s operation, the femoral head was cut off, but then left in her leg. This has since turned into a blob of bones constantly grinding against each other and causing Halle’s limp.

Her hip must now be repaired once again, or else she’ll suffer from severe arthritis and will eventually be unable to walk.

(Halle is the white dog in the video — on the left side of this page — called "Halle playing." She is no longer allowed to play with the other dogs. She will be confined to the house until she has her operation and heals from it.)

For your kindness

In thanks for your kindness, we promise to:

  • send you newsletter updates with photos and video so you can see Peanut’s and Halle’s progress after surgery (we promise we won’t send too many—we’ll be respectful of your inbox).
  • list your name as a donor on our website, at www.maydaypitbullrescue.org, unless you ask us not to.

As a result of the surgery, Peanut and Halle should have pain-free lives. But they both need these operations as soon as possible.

Once they’re good and strong again, we’ll make sure they both find their forever homes. With your help, Halle will get the life she deserves, and Peanut will finally find the family she was looking for on that doorstep.
