Jett Foundation, a Boston-area based non-profit, was established in 2001 and is dedicated to finding treatments and cures for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
In conjunction with The Jett Foundation, campers and thier familes founded Camp Promise West in Seattle in the Summer of 2009 as a way to help not only children, but young adolescents and adults with neuromuscular diseases from the Pacific Northwest in the midst of the H1N1 Swine Flu outbreak, which had prevented these same people from going to other muscular dystrophy camps that summer.
In Summer, 2011, the program expanded to the east coast at a camp site in Hebron, Connecticut. In it's first year of operation, Camp Promise East played host to nine campers, at no cost to thier families, and regardless of their age. Campers were able to enjoy swimming, basketball, and other typical summer camp activities that were adapted for thier limited muscle function. The older campers were included in a program called "Transitions" where they were joined by special guests to discuss various topics related to the transition into adulthood and independence - from job training to adaptive technology - and even dating and relationships.
All the campers began and ended the week long session with dances - the finale was actually PROM themed (we're not kidding!)
The program is the first of it's kind in the US, and through private donations from the public like this one, James and the Jett / Camp Promise Team hope to host at least 20 more campers in 2012, if not even more than that ambitious number.
On December 5, 2011, ConnectiKids Fund founder James Lacerenza expanded his charity to include Jett's Camp Promise East program in addition to his previous work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which will continue and remain seperate. Lacerenza felt a need to help even more children and adults with neuromuscular diseases than ever before experience the freedom and friendship that both camp programs provide.
All donations made through this page will DIRECTLY benefit Camp Promise East, which is overseen by the Jett Foundation.
