At only 24 years old, Naheed Ahmadi Farid is one of the 413 female candidates running in Afghanistan's September 2010 parliamentary elections. Despite an upsurge in Taliban violence directed at candidates and election officials, women like Naheed are literally putting their lives on the line to give a voice to a female population that has been forced into silence for over 30 years. Naheed is part of the growing trend of women and girls standing up to the Taliban and long-standing cultural oppression. They are the most important changemakers in Afghanistan: championing education, seizing opportunity, strengthening their communities and helping to propel global stability, peace and prosperity.
Help us help women like Naheed.
As the election polls close today, we are asking you to help support M2M's Rural Midwifery Training Program in Naheed's name. We are launching our first training program in November with 12 women from Taliban-controlled provinces. If we reach our $5,000 goal, your contributions will directly cover over half of the expenses of the entire program. Naheed and her family are staunch supporters of maternal healthcare, as she is the daughter-in-law of a gynecologist in Herat.
Rural Midwifery Training Program
Afghanistan has the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world and up to 70% of these deaths are preventable with basic medical treatment. Women and newborns are needlessly dying for reasons as simple as the failure to suction the blood from the baby's mouth at birth, failure to deliver the placenta and unsterile birthing tools. Many rural communities lack access to medical care, and even where there is a nearby doctor, most of them are male and forbidden to treat women below the waist. M2M has created a four-week program to directly address these issues. We will train women from rural communities as skilled birth attendants to drastically reduce the birthing mortality rates in their villages and surrounding areas. In addition, we will be providing women with a culturally accepted job, giving females value in their communities and enhancing the value of girls' education.
Please give $10, or more if you are able, your donation will literally save a life!
Thank you for daring to believe in our common humanity!
Cheers,
