For our family, this walk is about so much more than just raising funds for RSD/CRPS research; it is also about raising awareness. It is about raising awareness for this horrible disease which has stolen so much from our family. Over the past nine years, this disease has taken the fun-loving and spontaneous mother I grew up with and transformed her into someone who stuggles to get through the pain each and every day and, as of December of 2008, it is trying to take a piece of me. They have found no research that says that RSD/CRPS is genetic in anyway, but rather that it is brought on by a traumatic injury and that it usually attacks a poor autoimmune system. I guess both my mother and I had the stars in perfect alignment the days of our falls. They say that life can change in a moment and I know that for my husband, my 5 year old daughter and I life surely did. I thought that my husband was going to throw up on the doctor's shoes on the day that we got my RSD diagnosis, as we were one of the few who actually knew what was in store for us; we knew the life sentence we were receiving.

 

However, thanks to the research of the wonderful people before me, my RSD was caught with the first 6 months, so I am able to lead a fairly "normal" life, at least for now. I am able still able to receive lumbar nerve blocks to stop the spreading of the pain and medications to maintain nerve function and pain. All of this stemming from just a moment of the "hokey pokey" at a combo birthday party for my daughter and I three years ago this December.

 

So please, take a moment, just one minute, today as you read this to think about the things you value in life, be aware of them, and cherish them. We realize that these are very difficult times to be asking for funds but every dollar counts. Anything you can contribute will make a difference, no matter how big or small. Also, remember that we are walking to raise awareness, and each and every person that you share my story, or the stories of those on the attached websites, with will learn something about this little known disease. So please take this moment and share and make others aware as well. Help me not only raise awareness for this walk but for RSD/CRPS suffers everywhere.
