Did you know?.....
- On February 27th, Chile was struck by an 8.8 mega earthquake and tsunami that have been followed by over 200 aftershocks (and counting...).
- The quake was the 5th biggest earthquake in recorded history.
- Roughly 2 million Chileans have been seriously affected by the quake, which is 12% of the population, or 1 in 8 Chileans.
- Current estimates are that the recovery process could take up to 7 years.
- Oxfam America (an important international relief organization) was only able to raise $3,499 for relief efforts in Chile while it raised $2.9 million in the same time period for Haiti.
Just two weeks have gone by, and it´s startling to see that headlines about Chile are disappearing from world news headlines. We´re concerned that the same global outpouring of support for Haiti´s disaster relief effort will not be duplicated for Chile. Our point is not to distract from the relief effort in Haiti, it´s simply to simultaneously build awareness of Chile's urgent situation. We need your help before the global memory of this catastrophic event fades away.
VE Global: VE's local team is leading the repair effort, hazard removal, food and sanitary product distribution and emotional and survival training support for the children in its institutional network in Santiago.
A four-tiered strategy is underway to combat the damage caused by Saturday's earthquake and raise the necessary $30,000 to rebuild and support its institutions.
VE Global’s mission is to empower volunteers in Chile to unite, act and engage others throughout the world to protect children’s rights. Under our mission, we have four primary goals:
- Provide opportunities that enable children and youth at social risk to become responsible and productive adults playing active roles in their communities.
- Promote leadership, long-term social commitment and solidarity through empowering volunteers to develop, implement and sustain innovative projects for children and youth.
- Complement and improve the child and youth services of less visible institutions by collaborating with them to garner resources and social capital.
- Provide and promote opportunities for greater local and global community involvement in our mission and social change in general.
Chile needs us urgently, so Josh and Meghan are putting you to the CHILE RELIEF CHALLENGE!!!
We have set big fundraising goals and we´re willing to put ourselves on the line. BUT, the lengths we will go to in order to reach these Chile Challenge goals all depend on your spirit of giving...
Here are our Chilean Relief Challenge goals:
If our total donations for both causes reach:
$5,000
Meghan and Josh will give up coffee for an entire year (and you all know how much CAFÉ means to both of us- this will be painful, and you´ll just have to trust us because we love Chile). Even more painful will be the next goal...
$10,000
Meghan and Josh will run a half-marathon (13 miles/21 km) within the next 6 months. If possible, we will participate in a marathon in the highly-affected southern zone of Chile.
Beyond $10,000
We´re so excited to get this effort started and we know we can count on all of your for the sake of Chile. Please forward this email, spread the word, and let us know what else
we can do to help effectively impact the Chile earthquake relief effort. We'll be in touch through our
Blog,
Facebook, and
Twitter pages with our CHILE RELIEF CHALLENGE updates.
