We are a family of four, myself, my husband Andy, our son, Drew (5) and daughter Rylan, (3). When our son was just 2, we received the Autism diagnosis. I always "felt" that there was something just "not right", but I thought I was crazy. When we found out about Autism, it confirmed I wasnt crazy, but really, i would have rather have been . Our world came crashing down. What was "autism"?. We didnt even know. That first year was the hardest year ever. I threw myswelf into reading every bit of material I could, just to learn how to help our son "get better". I read every library book and was on the internet into the wee hours of the mornings. I exhausted myself. The first couple years after the diagnosis were especially difficult due to his behaviors, the headbanging, poor sleeping,  the meltdowns. We couldnt go aywhere. AT about age 4, things started to subside. He began to learn more. He could feed himself. Now at age 5 he is potty trained and smiles a lot. He understands so much more. We have been through the ringer and have the bills to show the extensive amount of interventions we have tried/try. Its all been worth it and Ill continue to try everything just to help him have a good future.

 

My hope is to help parents who find themselves in this same situation not to feel so lost and alone; to educate and to help ensure there are monies out there for families like us who could use the help!
